Welcoming the Stranger: Iraqi Refugees Seek Asylum in Boston

"For when I was hungry, you gave me food, when thirsty, you gave me drink;

when I was a stranger you took me into your home... I tell you this,

anything you did for the least one here, however humble, you did for me."
(the words of Jesus from Matthew 25:31 - 44)

Iraqi families uprooted by the war in their country and their lives in danger due to their associations with the American military, are arriving in Boston this summer seeking asylum in the United States. They will arrive in a strange, new land with barely more than their shattered lives and the few possessions they can carry. I have met a few of them - one is a doctor who once worked in a Baghdad hospital, another is a teacher, another a physical therapist. They are all starting over. I can't begin to imagine what they have seen or endured. But I was struck by their resiliency, optimism and gratitude. It will be humbling to learn more of their stories as time goes on.

Refugee Immigration Ministry, a non-profit agency supported by the Episcopal Diocese in Massachusetts, has facilitated the organization of several "clusters" of local congregations to provide support for newly arriving refugees seeking asylum. For many years, St. Paul's has provided financial support to RIM through our Ministry Outside the Parish Committee and last year we joined with the Cambridge cluster to begin forming the Cambridge-Brookline cluster.

This past year we provided support to Sabah Kader and his five year old son, Omar, who were severely injured when our military mistakenly fired on their car at a check point in Mosul. Omar's mother was killed and Omar was burned over 70% of his body. Over the past three years both father and son have been successfully treated at Boston hospitals and as of two months ago they were granted asylum. RIM's support has been of enormous value to this Iraqi family.

An Iraqi family of four - mother, father and two children - are arriving this summer and will need help getting settled in their new home. Together in partnership with other communities of faith we can provide assistance in a wide variety of ways. For example: helping the family find an apartment, assistance with applying for health care, food stamps - even how to get a "T" pass, providing used furniture and household items, advice on job search. They will need a lot of help to get on their feet. As partners in the cluster we can share our resources, contacts and assistance. This is both a critical and a profoundly humanitarian ministry.

Appreciating the choir

This Sunday will be the choir's last with us until fall, so let's send them off on a good note. We'll sing them a congregational benediction and say thanks to them at coffee hour.

Music for the June 14 Service at the picnic-revised rehearsal time
The previously planned evening rehearsal wasn't convenient for many  people, so singers who would like to help lead the music at the June 14 service at Larz Anderson Park should plan to rehearsal before the service at 8:15 am on Sunday, June 14 in the Lichtenberger Room. At 9:15 am we will carpool over to the park.  We'll rehearse the gospel song "The Storm is Passing Over" at Larz Anderson at 9:30 am.  (We'll also have one more rehearsal of that song in the sanctuary after the 10 am service this Sun., June 7.) Anyone who'd like to sing is welcome. Questions?  Call Molly and Tim at 617-731-5989 or email  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

PicnickSun. June 14, 10 a.m. at the Larz Anderson shelter:

worship, singing, food, kickball, and a chance to meet rector-elect Jeff Mello-don't miss it!

Worship at 10 a.m. only from June 21 through Sept.6, i.e., we won't have 8 a.m. services during the summer.

Summer scheduling resumes June 21 and goes through Sept. 6. As last year, the lessons, prayers of the people, and cards saying usher, acolyte, chalice, and healing prayers will be out on a music stand near the font before the service. If you'd like to participate, take the lesson or prayers to read, or turn a card over so the presider will know it's been selected. Then when the appropriate time comes in the liturgy, do your thing. Thanks!

Altar flowers for June 7 are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of

Wilson L. Becker and Dorothy Wacker Douville.
