Music at Special Services
In addition to singing from September to June at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service, The St. Paul's Choir sings at many very special choral services. Such special services include: the "Procession of Carols" service (normally on the Saturday before Christmas; the choral "Midnight Mass" on Christmas Eve; and the Good Friday service.

A Lenten Invitation Service: Reclaiming the Ashes

On Friday, March 11, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookline is starting what will hopefully be a new tradition in the coming years: a service called "A Lenten Invitation: Reclaiming the Ashes".   It aims to address one question: Why bother with Lent?  This new service will act as a "prelude" to our weekly Friday House Church Meetings during Lent, which in turn will culminate in our Good Friday service during Holy Week.

The Lenten Invitation Service seeks to deepen our connection with the meanings and opportunities of Lent. The service will include contemporary and traditional readings, prayers, hymns, anthems, and

The Mozart Requiem (Robert Levin version)

sung by the St. Paul's Choir

We hope that you choose to make it a part of your Lenten journey. (Childcare will be available)

Choral Evensong: Sunday, May 9th at 5:00pm

Come treat yourself to the soothing, meditative prayers and anthems set in this wonderful Anglican choral tradition.  Evensong, or Evening Prayer, dates back in its current form to the English Reformation, but is derived from services in the earliest Christian communities dating back to the medieval period, which began in the 5th Century.  In some English churches and University chapels, it continues to be held every day.
Here at St. Paul’s, we open ourselves to Evensong as a time to reflect on the “ending of the day” in our lives, recognizing the multiple layers of meaning that this may hold for each of us.  We will gather outside the church before the service for the choral prelude, the ringing of the bells, the opening prayers, and our candlelight processional into the church.
The choral music planned includes the following:
Hush, my dear, L Sowerby
To Thee, O Lord, S Rachmaninov
From the deep, AE Clarkson
Ave Maria, I. Stravinsky
They are at rest, E Elgar
Now the day is over, J Barnby

Annual Messiah Sing

Each year, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookline, MA puts on the wonderful community singing of  Handel's Messiah.   The essense of the 36th Annual Messiah Sing on December 6, 2009 is captured in the 1:57 minute video below.  This video was made by John Rich, who has graciously given us permission to use it.
