Choral Evensong: Sunday, November 1st at 5:00 p.m.
Please bring 2 candles, and a friend
Come bathe yourself in the soothing, meditative prayers and anthems set in this wonderful Anglican choral tradition. Evensong, or Evening Prayer, dates back in its current form to the English Reformation, but is derived from services in the earliest Christian communities dating back to the medieval period, which began in the 5th Century. In some English churches and University chapels, it continues to be held every day.
Here at St. Paul’s, we open ourselves to Evensong as a time to reflect on the “ending of the day” in our lives, recognizing the multiple layers of meaning that this may hold for each of us. In this light, having this evensong on All Saints Day is particularly fitting.
Please bring two candles, one for yourself and one for someone else who may need one. We will gather outside the church before the service for the ringing of the bells, the opening prayers, and our candlelight processional into the church.
The choral music planned includes the following:
The duteous day now closeth, JS Bach; Day is dying in the west, AE Clarkson; Lobe den Herren, H Distler; Bogoro Ditsye Dyevo, S Rachmaninov; God be in my head, J Rutter
Now the day is over, J Barnby
