Position Description for Assistant Rector (Part-Time)

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Brookline, MA

Hours: 20 ~ 25 hours per week

About the Position:

We invite applicants who are energetic, faithful, compassionate, proactive, and highly organized to minister with our clergy and congregation as the Assistant Rector, focusing on supporting and developing ministries and leaders in the following areas: outreach and peace & justice, newcomer welcome and incorporation, and small group ministry. We welcome candidates whose commitment to social action is grounded in a rich life of prayer, and who provide a pastoral presence as well as the capacity to organize people for coordinated action to make public impact with other partner communities outside St. Paul’s. With the right person called to this ministry and continued growth in the church, we hope to increase the hours of this position in the future.

  • Status: Exempt, Clergy

  • Location: On-site in Brookline; limited flexibility for remote work in consultation with the Rector

Core Responsibilities

The Assistant Rector will work under the Rector’s supervision to support and develop the ministries and leadership of the areas below. Regular priestly responsibilities include:

  • Preach approximately once or twice per month and preside as scheduled.

  • Share in pastoral care with the Rector (home and hospital visits, funeral and wedding preparation as needed).

  • Participate in staff meetings, Vestry and relevant committee meetings within and outside St. Paul’s, and Diocesan clergy gatherings.

  • Model healthy boundaries, transparent communication, and sabbath self-care

Areas of Ministry:

Outreach, Peace & Justice

  • Work with lay leaders to support and develop ministries in outreach, advocacy, and public witness consistent with the Gospel and Episcopal teaching; help build a parish-wide culture of public engagement grounded in prayer and worship.

  • Accompany and equip lay leaders in these ministries, including creation care and justice, affordable housing, immigration and refugee support, racial justice, and ecumenical and interfaith collaborations.

  • Develop an annual calendar of outreach and advocacy opportunities (hands-on service, education, and public actions) with clear on-ramps for newcomers and families.

  • Preach and teach regularly to form the parish in Scriptural vision for compassion, justice, and reconciliation, and in the practices of prayer and advocacy through Sunday worship and other avenues of parish formation.

  • Coordinate communications and collaborations with Episcopal City Mission and Greater Boston Interfaith Organization, St. Stephen’s Youth Program, and other community partners; cultivate relationships with town officials, nonprofits, and neighboring congregations.

Newcomer Welcome & Incorporation

  • Work with the Rector, Newcomer Welcome Committee, and Vestry to create opportunities for newcomers to connect with the parish community and ministries; and help organize and support welcoming pathways from first visit to active participation.

  • Organize and coordinate Inquirers Course on the Episcopal Tradition with the Rector.

  • Partner with Communications to ensure the website, social media, and print materials offer clear invitations and sign-ups.

  • Track newcomer engagement (with appropriate confidentiality) and communicate with ministry leaders to develop relationships with newcomers and help them become integrated into the community

Small Group Ministry for Fellowship and Formation

  • Work with lay leaders to create a parish-wide small group framework (e.g., seasonal groups around Scripture and prayer, and outreach and service).

  • Recruit and train facilitators; curate and discern materials that reflect our Episcopal/Anglican ethos and St. Paul’s values.

  • Follow up and assess with lay leaders the impact of small group ministry.

Qualifications

  • M.Div or higher

  • Priest in good standing in The Episcopal Church (or other church in full communion with The Episcopal Church) with a theology of grace, inclusion, and justice.

  • Demonstrated experience organizing volunteers and forming lay leaders; ability to manage projects from vision to implementation.

  • Strong preacher/teacher with excellent interpersonal and communication skills; culturally competent and trauma-informed.

  • Comfortable using digital tools (e.g., Realm, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office 365, social media tools).

  • Commitment to radical welcome of all people, dialog across differences, safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults, and a collaborative staff culture.

Work Hours & Schedule

  • 20 ~ 25 hours/week

  • Schedule coordinated with the Rector.

  • Flex time for pastoral emergencies and major parish seasons (Advent/Christmas, Holy Week/Easter) by mutual agreement.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Compensation in accordance with Diocese of Massachusetts guidelines, prorated at 0.5 - 0.625 FTE, commensurate with experience.

  • Pension and benefits prorated per diocesan/policy eligibility for part-time clergy.

  • Professional development funds and time encouraged.

Accountability & Evaluation

  • Reports to the Rector with a written annual ministry plan and weekly check-ins.

  • Annual mutual ministry review with goals for the coming year, informed by requirements listed above.
